About
I am Dr. Hadis Tadele, a bird and nature guide, conservation biologist and university lecturer based in Bale-Robe, Ethiopia. With a PhD in Ecological and Systematic Zoology and more than a decade of fieldwork, I know Ethiopia's wild places well, especially the Bale Mountains National Park, Simen Mountains National Park, Borena National Park, Wetlands, forests and lkes in the Great Rift Valley and most of Ethiopia's natural wonders. I have guided birding and nature tours across these landscapes, helping visitors find Ethiopia's endemic birds, the four crane species, and other highland and lowland wildlife across the country. I am also co-founder of Bird and Nature Ethiopia, a local NGO working to protect the country's birds and biodiversity. My work in tourism promotion and research, which earned me the Oromia Tourism Commission's Lifetime Tourism Award, means my tours combine expert identification with real insight into the ecology and the communities that live alongside these species. I guide in English, Amharic and Tigrigna, with basic Afaan Oromo.
Hobbies & Interests
I love birdwatching and exploring Ethiopia's Afroalpine highlands and wetlands on foot, always looking for something new in the field. I'm passionate about wildlife conservation, ecology and community-based ecotourism, and about showing that healthy nature and thriving local livelihoods go together. I also enjoy teaching and mentoring young conservationists, and sharing what I learn from the field, whether through research, mapping or a good conversation on the trail.
Fun Fact
My favorite bird is the Wattled Crane. I have spent years studying how it nests and feeds in the Afroalpine wetlands of Bale Mountains National Park and Boyo Wetland. I have counted birds in a wide range of places, from the Gibe Sheleko National Park to a city reservoir in Addis Ababa, and I still get excited by a good sighting. I have represented Ethiopia at crane and wetland conservation workshops in South Africa, Zambia and Kenya. I received a Lifetime Tourism Award from the Oromia Tourism Commission for my work in community-based ecotourism, and I still get more joy from a good day on the trail than from any award.
